Why do gay men wear harnesses? 

Leather harnesses are generally worn today to look sexy, to complement and enhance the appearance of muscles, and in some cases, to indicate which sexual acts you’re up for. But the history of harnesses goes a little deeper than that.

The tradition of gay men wearing leather seems to have begun shortly after World War II, when servicemen returned to buttoned-down society after experiencing sexual freedom during their service. Gay men took to biker bars, as they felt the hyper-masculinity of the biker groups gave them a cover for their activities. Hence, they wore leather to fit in, and it became known within the gay community that leather was something to look for if you were on the prowl. In the early 1970s, leather harnesses started selling in the gay community. It is believed these were modelled off the art of Touko Valio Laaksonen, aka Tom of Finland. He depicted men in harnesses to make erotic gay art without depicting actual sex, as it was illegal to do so at the time. Harnesses took off in the gay community as they looked great, were an obvious signal to other gay men that they were on the same team, and they had many uses in the bedroom.
